Opotiki District Council goes Smokefree!

Congratulations to the Opotiki District Council which resolved to adopt the educational Smokefree Outdoor Spaces policy in December 2007 making it one of only a few councils in New Zealand to adopt a comprehensive smokefree policy making all council-owned public places (beaches, parks, playgrounds, sports fields, reserves, etc.) and events smokefree.  A media campaign was initiated, and signage designed by esteemed Eastern Bay of Plenty artist Jamie Boynton was erected, in March 2008. The Smokefree Councils Implementation Kit: A guide for local health promoters has been developed by the Cancer Society of New Zealand and the Health Sponsorship Council (HSC).
