Kaipara

Background

The Kaipara District Council (KDC) will be the first council in Northland to implement smokefree public places, with Kaipara playgrounds going smokefree from 29 November 2008. The official launch will be held as part of a Kaipara Healthy Lifestyle Expo in the Town Hall.

The Kaipara Community Outcomes Steering Group unanimously supported a proposal, to make Kaipara playgrounds smokefree, which KDC accepted at their May 2008 Council meeting.

Kaipara has chosen to use an educative approach and will erect smokefree signs in the 12 Kaipara playgrounds asking the public to consider their kids before smoking in Kaipara playgrounds.

In November 2008 volunteers undertook a pre-implementation survey and collected all cigarette butts from 4 Kaipara playgrounds these are yet to be analysed and counted.  In April 2009 a post-evaluation survey and butt collection will be undertaken from the same 4 Kaipara playgrounds for comparison.  These results will be included as part of the overall media plan.
