Upper Hutt

Background

Upper Hutt City Council is the second largest city Council by area in New Zealand and on 31 May 2006 the Council adopted a smokefree public places policy, making all the parks, reserves and playgrounds smokefree.

Research carried out by 5th year medical students from the Wellington School of medicine found that 83% of park users in the area think that having a smokefree parks policy is a good idea.  Data indicated that amongst both smokers and non smokers there was a great deal of community support for the Upper Hutt Smokfree Parks Policy.

The policy is about promoting healthy lifestyles and providing positive role models for children.
